Have Tata Commenced Safari EV Or Turbo Petrol Testing?

Tata Safari Facelift Spied Testing In Indore

Recently, Tata Motors suggested that the all-electric versions of the Harrier and Safari facelift could go on sale ahead of their electric counterparts. So our first guess is that Tata are testing their new EV powertrain with the test mule in the image above. However, on closer look, the Safari test mule features an open grille, suggesting it could be testing the new 1.5-litre direct injection turbo petrol engine. Whatever it may be, Tata seem to be hard at work testing their new powertrain options for their D1-segment SUVs.

As far as the specifications of both powertrain are concerned, Tata have already revealed that the new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine produces 170PS of power and 280Nm of torque. The petrol variants of the Harrier and Safari are likely to offer the option of both manual and automatic transmissions. However, details are scarce at the moment. As for the EV powertrain, Tata are yet to reveal the exact specifications of their upcoming electric offerings. However, we expect the Harrier EV and Safari EV to feature a 60kWh battery pack that could give both SUVs a claimed range of 500km. Both SUVs could also feature a dual-motor setup, which could mark the return of a 4-wheel drive option for the Safari nameplate.

When launched, the Harrier EV and Safari EV could take on electric SUVs from Mahindra like the XUV e8 and XUV e9. The Harrier and Safari turbo petrol, on the other hand, will rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Creta and Alcazar, MG Hector and Hector Plus as well as the Toyota Innova Hycross.
