The Mahindra Thar is currently the best-selling lifestyle off-roader in the country, but it will soon face competition from its biggest rival, the Jimny five-door from Maruti Suzuki. With the Jimny's four doors being its unique selling point, Mahindra, the country's largest utility vehicle manufacturer, is also planning to launch a five-door version of the Thar. Test mules of the new Thar have been spotted multiple times in the country, and new spy images of the upcoming SUV have recently surfaced online.

As per reports, the upcoming five-door Mahindra Thar has been spotted in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, and in the latest spy shots, the SUV can be seen from various angles. The first image captures the left front three-quarters of the vehicle, revealing its elongated structure compared to the outgoing two-door Thar. The new SUV will feature two additional doors in the middle. While the exact dimensions are unknown, sources suggest that the five-door Thar will be approximately 22 percent longer than its two-door counterpart.
Furthermore, the recently surfaced spy shots also provide a glimpse of the upcoming SUV's side profile and rear end. It appears that the five-door Mahindra Thar will retain the same design elements as the two-door variant, including the front and rear-end styling. The only visible change is the newly designed alloy wheels. In a previous up-close video of the car, it was revealed that the middle doors of the new Thar will have a unique feature. Instead of the conventional horizontal placement, the door handles of the additional two doors will be vertically placed on the pillar, similar to the Maruti Suzuki Swift.
In a previous walkaround video of the Thar 5 door, the car's interior was also revealed, and it appeared that not much had been changed on the dashboard of the five-door Thar. The infotainment screen, air conditioning system controls, steering wheels, and seats all looked the same as the outgoing two-door Thar. However, some differences were noted, such as the roof of the new five-door Thar appearing more like a standard passenger car and having soft-touch materials. The roof also had a sunglass holder and dome lights. Speakers on the roof were missing. The video also showed the rear of the car, which had a decent amount of legroom for the rear passengers.
According to sources, the upcoming five-door Mahindra Thar is expected to retain the 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol and 2.2-liter diesel engines from the Thar 3-door, with both manual and automatic transmission options available. Recent spy images have also suggested that the SUV will come with a 4x2 option in addition to the standard 4x4 option. The new Thar five-door is anticipated to make its debut around June 2023 and is expected to be priced between Rs 14-15 lakh.
