The Indian Navy has reached new heights in engineering excellence with INS Vikrant, India's first home-grown aircraft carrier. Mahindra has recently joined this prestigious journey by driving three of its domestically produced SUVs - the XUV300, XUV700, and Scorpio-N - on the decks of INS Vikrant. These vehicles are the first to board the aircraft carrier, marking a significant milestone.

Measuring 262.5mm in length and 62.5mm in width, and towering nearly 18 stories high, the INS Vikrant is India's first domestically developed aircraft carrier. Its flight deck is nearly the size of two football fields, providing ample space for the three Mahindra SUVs to be driven on board. The carrier is so massive that navigating through its passages and lobbies covers a distance of approximately 12 km. The INS Vikrant is the first of several new aircraft carriers planned by the Ministry of Defence for the Indian Navy, and Mahindra's collaboration marks the first time an automobile brand has taken its vehicles on board an aircraft carrier.

Make in India

Although the INS Vikrant is a remarkable symbol of India's engineering achievements, the Mahindra SUVs brought on board represent the success of the "Make in India" campaign. All three SUVs were manufactured in India and have established high standards in terms of safety and driving performance.

The Mahindra XUV300 is a sub-compact SUV and one of the most reasonably priced products from the UV specialist, featuring two powertrain options – a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged 110 PS petrol engine and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder 115 PS diesel engine.

On the other hand, the Mahindra XUV700 and Scorpio-N are midsize SUVs that offer distinct characteristics. The Scorpio-N is a ladder-on-frame SUV with a robust appeal, while the XUV700 provides a more refined package with its monocoque frame. Both SUVs are equipped with 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engine options, priced similarly to each other.

All of the engine options for the Mahindra Scorpio-N come with a standard six-speed manual transmission, but the higher-spec diesel and turbo-petrol engines can also be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The Scorpio is rear-wheel drive by default, while the higher-spec diesel models come with all-wheel drive. This includes mechanical rear-locking differentials, an ESP-based brake-locking front differential, an independent front suspension, and a five-link rear suspension.

Recently, Mahindra launched the Scorpio-N and announced prices for petrol-manual and diesel-manual rear-wheel-drive versions. The petrol-manual combination is available in Z2, Z4, Z8, and Z8 L variants, while the diesel-manual combination is available in all of these variants, with the additional Z6 variant slotted between Z4 and Z8. Both combinations offer the Z8 L variant in either six-seater or seven-seater configurations.
